Lanes named as specialist contractor for £330m Tube upgrade

Lanes Groups Rail Division has won a contract as one of 24 specialist suppliers who will carry out work worth £330m to upgrade 70 London Underground stations, making them fit for the next decade.

Lanes was selected as part of a new approach by Transport for London to major infrastructure projects to ensure all work is done to best value, using innovative technology and minimising disruption to the travelling public.

Lanes Rail Division Commercial Director Matt Todd said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a specialist contractor to work on this exciting seven-year project, which we believe reflects the high quality of work we already do on the London Underground.”

London Underground (LU) has selected the contractors and three multi-discipline design firms to bring a new innovative and collaborative approach to the work, which will see the 70 stations modernised and maintained to a common standard that will mean no significant further work should be needed for ten further years.

The Programme will use LU’s STAKE delivery model, designed to create greater efficiency by reducing sub-contractor layers in the supply chain. LU will be engaging directly with front-line contractors to employ the craftspeople who will deliver work on-site.

Announcing the contracts, LU’s Programme Director for Stations, Miles Ashley, said: “Great craftsmanship is the key to the success of any infrastructure project, and our Stake approach allows long-term engagement with the people at the workface and recognises that they are the most valuable part of our team.”

Lanes Group already operates major Total Purchased Services contracts for LU, including drainage, premises and building maintenance, seepage, locks, vegetation control and fencing

In November, LU awarded Lanes reactive and planned maintenance contracts for bridges and structures, and a contract for core drainage works.
