Lanes utility engineers travel record distances to deliver sustainable service

Lanes Group is demonstrating the vital importance of using effective transport management systems when delivering high quality, sustainable services by clocking up record vehicle mileages at the start of 2014.

On just one day, Tuesday 7 January, the entire fleet of 213 Specialist utility vehicles delivering on the company’s Waste Water Infrastructure Contract in London and the South West travelled 11,994.8 miles, further than the distance from London to Sydney in Australia.

That represents an average of 88.2 miles per vehicle, compared with 76.8 miles per vehicle on the first Tuesday in December 2013, an increase of 15%.

Lanes, the UK’s largest independent provider of pipeline and utilities services, uses the vehicle tracking and mobile resource management system Masternaut to monitor and manage its utility contract fleet.

Lanes Group Technical Director Andy Brierley said: “The increased mileage reflects our success in delivering a high quality, effective management of waste water assets with unprecedented job volumes achieving a total of 781 jobs a day through relentless bouts of inclement weather.

“A key part of our strategy has been to make service delivery is sustainable, which is why we have systems like Masternaut in place. Increased mileage is only acceptable if we know our services are being delivered as efficiently as possible.  Live data allows us to manage our resource enabling stringent Customer response times are met.

“We have also invested in the newest and most advanced, fuel-efficient drainage vehicles, so we can be sure we are providing a sustainable, environmentally-conscious utility service.”

Lanes Group uses Masternaut to monitor and control mileage, constantly looking for ways to reduce the number of miles travelled per job completed.

Linked with other digital systems, it ensures each vehicle in the fleet is allocated to the right jobs during the day, maximising efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and cost.

Andy Brierley said: “Best in class fleet management is helping us deliver our service quickly and to a world class standard. So, as our vehicle mileages has increased, so have customer satisfaction scores, as recorded by our client, while customer complaints have plummeted.”
