About Thames Water

Thames Water, the largest water services company in the country supplies water and wastewater treatment facilities for Greater London, Luton, the Thames Valley, Surrey, Kent and other areas of the UK.

Thames Water serves 15 million customers – which is approximately 27% of the UK population. According to the organisation, it supplies 2.6 billion litres of drinking water to customers every single day, and treats 4.4 billion litres of wastewater each day.

What we do at our Slough utility hub

Our overriding focus is to deliver a quality service for Thames Water’s 15 million customers – an approach that has seen the water company’s wastewater service incentive mechanism (SIM) scores reach record levels.

We employ more than 900 wastewater engineers and support staff, and manage a supply chain of specialist contractors on behalf of Thames Water. Our teams, operating more than 350 specialist drainage vehicles, tackle more than 1,000 maintenance jobs every day – figures that support the fact that our contract with Thames Water is the largest and most complex in the UK.

Innovation is central to our success in working in partnership with Thames Water, a process that led to the opening, in 2016, of our Customer Solutions Centre (CSC) in Slough, Berkshire, to coordinate all maintenance activity.

The CSC is at the centre of a network of regional utility hubs, in Rye Meads, Kidlington, Gerrards Cross, Beckton, and St Iver, from which our teams operate around the clock, 365 days a year.

Industry-leading digital mobile working systems, developed by Lanes, enhance the productivity, safety, and effectiveness of these services.

Exceeding expectations

Since Lanes Group won the initial contract to provide wastewater network services to Thames Water, our team has gone from strength-to-strength, delivering the highest quality service to the organisation and its customers. Our efforts were rewarded in January 2018, when Thames Water signed additional contracts for our team to carry out sewage treatment plant cleaning, sewage pumping station cleaning, wet well emptying, and tankering.

Fatberg fighters

Finally, and perhaps quite famously, Lanes Group and Thames Water gained worldwide recognition for their work tackling the UK’s largest fatbergs.

Most recently our teams dismantled the Whitechapel Fatberg, which sparked significant global interest of the fatberg phenomenon and has now become the subject of an exhibition at the Museum of London. It also spawned our Fatberg Fighters initiative – a nationwide drive to teach our children about the dangers of blocking our drains and sewers.

We’re proud to say that our work has also won numerous national water industry and business awards, for innovation, health and safety, and service excellence.
