The giveaway signs of blocked drains

Blocked and Silted DrainHere are some of the tell-tale signs which indicate that you may have a blocked drain. If you act at this stage, you could avoid an emergency.

  • Smell: The easiest — and least pleasant — symptom to spot.
  • Sink drainage: Water taking longer than usual to drain from your sink.
  • Toilet drainage: Water rising almost to overflowing after flushing.
  • Gurgling: A ominous gurgling sound from the plug hole.

The danger of blocked drains

It’s important to act when you suspect that you have a blocked drain: overflowing sewage is a health risk (not to mention unpleasant) and damaged drains which are left unrepaired may cause further damage to property in the longer term.

A word of warning

Responsibility for maintenance and repair of private sewers or lateral drains (eg: the section which joins a property directly to the main) changed in October 2011, when the Government transferred private sewers and lateral drains into the ownership of the statutory water and sewerage companies (see DEFRA Consultation). It means that individuals are no longer responsible for
• Private sewers that they share with another property owner
• The section of their property's drain that lies outside the property boundary.

However the householder still retains the ownership of and responsibility for the drain serving the property and located within the property boundary. Check the DEFRA website for more details.
