What types of sewer problems do Lanes deal with?

Because much of the UK’s sewage network is Victorian, it is prone to blockages and breakages.

One of the most serious modern issues is the widespread threat of fatbergs – the masses of congealed fat, oil, grease (FOG) and other non-biodegradable items that collect in the pipes. This is due to cooking waste and household products like wet wipes and sanitary products being flushed down the drains.

Lanes worked with a major utilities company to tackle the infamous 2017 Whitechapel fatberg, removing 130 tonnes of solidified FOG and wipes using our sophisticated equipment and techniques.

We deal with a whole range of drain and sewer problems. Our services include:

Who is responsible for my sewer?

For domestic properties, sewer maintenance may be the responsibility of the local utilities provider, rather than the resident. These companies manage much of the sewer network, so if there is an issue with your sewage system, they may carry out and pay for repairs.

If you’re unsure about who is responsible for fixing a problem with a sewer near you, have a look at our guide to homeowners’ responsibility for drains and sewers, or give us a call directly. Our sewer specialists will help you to decide on the best course of action, and will even help you log the job with your utility provider.

How we repair and replace sewers

At Lanes, our sewer services use advanced technology to repair domestic sewer systems with minimum mess and disruption to local residents. Some of our methods include:

CCTV surveys – before tackling troublesome drains, we carry out a CCTV survey of the drain with a specialised underground camera to see what is causing the issue and assess any damage to the infrastructure. The information is recorded in the form of HD-quality images and video, allowing our engineers to pinpoint the problem and develop a solution to fix it.

CIPP – one of our most common ways of tackling problematic pipes is by cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) relining. Instead of digging up a street or garden to replace a section of sewer pipe, a liner coated with resin is installed into the damaged pipe via a manhole. The resin is cured (hardened) using either ultraviolet light or heated water, sealing up the cracks and creating a new pipe inside the old one. This method is much quicker and far less disruptive than traditional excavation.
