Flexible working key to A36 drainage project success

Lanes Group has delivered a programme of specialist drainage services to support a drainage improvement project on the A36 near Warminster.

The work has been completed by drainage engineers from the Lanes Bristol depot on behalf of Skanska, working for Highways England.

The upgrade has been completed to improve the drainage along this busy section of carriageway, removing a flood issue that had been previously present and caused standing water and ice in the winter months.

Lanes Group was commissioned to carry out root cutting, desilting, CCTV drainage surveying and patch lining as part of the wider programme of highway maintenance work.

Skanska Scheme Steward Daniel Lewis said: “We have appreciated the Lanes team’s willingness to be flexible with the way they have coordinated their work.

“Minimising inconvenience for road users and local residents has been central to our approach, so sensitive application of traffic management has been paramount.

“Lanes has always been willing to fit in their work around these requirements and the needs of other contractors, which has been very helpful to the successful conclusion of the drainage improvement work.”

Much of the work carried out by the Lanes drainage teams has been done at night.

Roots were cut with high pressure water jetting. CCTV drainage surveys showed where highway drainage pipes were damaged, either by cracking or joint displacement, and needed to be patch lined.

This involved inserting a short fibre-glass sleeve impregnated with resin into the pipe, and inflating it against the pipe in the damaged area. Once the resin had hardened, a tough new pipe-within-a-pipe had been created.

Sean Malone, Area Development Manager for the Lanes in the South West of England, said: “Our teams are used to working flexibly to support main highway contractors.

“We also operate the latest jetting and vacuumation technology, like recycler tankers, which can filter and reuse their water. This means that, when we are on site, our drainage teams are up to 70% more productive than contractors using conventional jet vac technology.”
