Lanes Group called in to survey Pierhead Building

Lanes Group has carried out a CCTV drainage survey at one of the most famous historical buildings in Wales.

Drainage engineers from the Lanes Cardiff depot were called in to survey the condition of all the roof downpipes on the Grade 1 Pier head Building.

The Pier head is part of the National Assembly of Wales in Cardiff, and one of the most important listed buildings in Wales.

The Lanes drainage team recorded HD-quality video footage showing the condition of the interior of the downpipes.

They were also commissioned to jet clean all surface water gullies leading from the downpipes to the main surface water system.

David Lewis, Area Development Manager for Lanes Group in South Wales, said: “Facilities managers at the National Assembly wanted to assess the condition of the downpipes as part of their regular maintenance programme.

“We were able to insert a push-rod video camera through inspection hatches in the down pipes, which are embedded in the structure of the building.

“We also used one of our jet vacuumation tankers to clean the gulley and drainage channels.

“Our success with this projects demonstrates how versatile our drainage teams are in being able to work on the most sensitive historical and listed buildings.

“Then again, we provide the same high level of service, with the same standard of care, for our day-to-day drainage customers as well.”

The Pier head Building, built in 1897, and was designed by architect William Frame in the French-Gothic Renaissance style.

It was first the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company, becoming the offices of the Port of Cardiff in 1947.

The building has highly ornamental features, including a clock tower known as Baby Ben, and external terracotta blocks. It is now the home of a museum of Welsh history.
