Lanes Group drainage surveys support spine road development

Lanes Group has been commissioned to clean and survey the drainage system for a new spine road being built to join hundred homes and the local communities together on the site of a former steelworks.

The road is being built by civil engineering contractor McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd at the former Brymbo steelworks site in Wrexham, north Wales.

Local people had been very keen for the road scheme to go ahead, as it was seen to be vital to attract new business to the area – and allow the potential development of a school for the community.

Telford-based McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd commissioned Lanes Group to clean the road’s new drainage system and carry out detailed CCTV drainage surveys.

Ian Clapham, area development manager for the Lanes Chester depot, which carried out the work, said: “It is an important step in the construction and asset handover process to clean and survey the full drainage systems.

“This is because the local authority, Wrexham County Borough Council and Welsh Water, need to have assurances that the drainage system is fit for purpose and in good condition before they formal adopt their parts of the system.”

The Lanes Chester team deployed a water recycling jet vacuum tanker to carry out the pipe cleaning work.

In all, 2,204 metres of concrete, plastic and clay drainage pipes ranging in diameter from 150 mm to 600 mm were cleaned, using the jet vac tanker’s powerful water jetting system.

A mainline CCTV drainage camera team then carried out a full survey of the surface water drainage system supporting the road development, using a range of techniques, including a robotic crawler camera.

The survey generated video images which McPhillips civil engineers can use to demonstrate that the drainage system is of a high quality, and that it is connected properly with the wider sewer network.

Lanes Group has the UK’s largest fleet of recycler jet vac tankers precisely for this kind of project. These machines have filters which allow it to clean and reuse water, so it can stay on station working for longer, without having to refill its water tank. This means this kind of highway drain cleaning can be completed faster and often more cost-effectively for the client.
