Lanes Group helps fast-track £169m jam-busting road scheme

Lanes Group has been praised for its cost and time-saving contributions to the construction of a major new road designed to cure one of the UK’s worst congestion hotspots.

The UK drainage and maintenance services leader delivered specialist drainage services throughout the construction of the new A453 dual-carriageway in Nottinghamshire.

In a 2.5 year project, managed by main contractor Laing O’Rourke, the commuter route has been widened from Junction 24 of the M1 to the A52 in the centre of Nottingham, at a cost of £169m.

The new road – named Remembrance Way in honour of the 453 British soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan – fully opened on 20 July 2015.

Lanes Group’s Derby depot delivered a range of services throughout the build process, including CCTV drainage surveys, drainage jetting and vacuumation, specialist cutting services, patch lining, and pipe deformity repair.

Laing O’Rourke Civil Engineer Joseph Maltezos said: “Lanes Group has been a very useful partner throughout this project. On a number of occasions their specialist expertise saved us substantial amounts of time and money.

“They’ve worked well with our teams, and have fitted in well with our very tight schedule which has helped us meet our completion deadlines. This is vital for such a high-profile project that we were determined to finish on time.”

Chris Norbury, Area Development Manager for the Lanes Derby depot, said: “We have provided just about every service in our repertoire to support this scheme, which is one of the most important highway improvement projects in the East Midlands in recent years.

“We’re delighted that, at key moments, our specialist expertise has made the difference in terms of resolving important drainage issues.”

In one case, a CCTV survey carried out by Lanes found that a 300mm diameter surface water pipe, 25 metres from the manhole access point, and beneath a newly-laid roadway, had become deformed.

Laing O’Rourke considered the option of excavating the new roadway to replace the faulty pipe. However, Lanes was able, instead, to cut out the deformed inner wall of the plastic pipe and reline the section.

In another example, a sub-contractor had mistakenly driven a spike through a drainage line. The Lanes team used a specialist cutter to remove it, and patch lined the hole, again avoiding the need for an excavation.

From its base, in Riverside Park, Raynesway, Derby, Lanes Group provides drainage services for customers across the East Midlands, including Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, and Lincolnshire.
