Lanes Group named as a finalist in British Construction Industry Awards

Lanes Group is in the running for a 2015 British Construction Industry Award after completing a sewer rehabilitation project two months early and 20 per cent under budget.

The scheme to repair a Severn Trent Water drainage asset will be judged in the BCIA Civil Engineering Project of the Year (up to £10m) category.

Since 2011, Lanes Group has completed more than 30 waste water rehabilitation projects for STW under a framework contract with NMC Nomenca. However, Malvern Technology Centre, home to international defence, aerospace and security specialist QinetiQ, was a particular challenge.

Along 180 metres of its length, the pipe was found to be 50 per cent deformed. But Lanes Group defied all the odds to repair the pipe using only no-dig techniques.

This new scope of work avoided invasive excavation so there was no risk of damaging nearby fibre optic system which is crucial to information security, and protecting QinetiQ’s clients from cyber attack.

By combining patch repairs with a cure in place pipeline (CIPP) reline technique that uses UV light to harden a pipe liner, Lanes and NMC Nomenca were able to fully rehabilitate the pipe, and a further 600-metres of gravity sewer.

The project was completed in four weeks instead of 12 weeks, and £48,000 under-budget. Lanes Group Business Development Director Richard Leigh said the company was proud to reach the BCIA finals, adding:

This is the first time we have been put forward for the BCIAs, which have a very broad-based industry content. That this has been a record year for the number of entries makes our achievement in being named as a finalist even more impressive.

The awards will be made at a gala dinner in London on 14 October.
