Lanes scores a winner for United

It looks as though Rossendale United FC has the perfect pitch, after a visit from Lanes for Drains ended a serious problem with waterlogging at the club’s East Lancashire ground.

And, despite other matches in the region being called off following heavy downpours, the Unibond League club proudly reports that since Lanes cleaned out the land drainage system, they’ve been able to play every scheduled friendly without a hitch.

A delighted Steve Hobson, club chairman, explains: “For the last twelve months, we’ve had a real problem with rain staying on top of the pitch. In fact last season two games were postponed because of it, and one game was abandoned mid way through because of the sodden conditions.

“I was determined that we weren’t going to have another season like so I rang Lanes for Drains to see whether anything could be done.

“And I’m really glad I made that call!” exclaims Steve. “I expected it to take days, but the local depot in Preston called me back straightaway saying ‘Could we come tomorrow?’ — and that was that!

“Two days later we had had 40 tonnes of silt and rocks removed from our drains, and even recent excessive rain hasn’t stopped any of our matches, yet clubs less than ten miles away have had their games called off.

“Our groundsman used to spend hours in his wellies stabbing the ground with a pitchfork to try and clear the surface water, so he’s a very happy man!

“Of course now we have a perfect pitch, we’re hoping for a perfect performance by our players too,” laughs Steve. “But I’m not sure Lanes can help us with that one!”
