Lanes works in partnership with council on culvert survey flood plan

Lanes Group is working with Bolton Council to survey thousands of metres of culvert across the town as part of a programme to minimise the risk of flooding.

The drainage company is carrying out a programme of work to provide detailed CCTV drainage surveys of culverts that pose the highest flood risk.

The work is being funded through an Environment Agency grant, which allows local authorities to bid for money to be spent on surveying culverts that are considered critical to flood prevention.

It is being carried out by the team from the Lanes Group depot at Eccles, in Greater Manchester.

The initial focus has been on the culverts crossing main roads but in further phases, surveys are being carried out adjacent to business and residential properties.

Lanes Area Development Manager Marvin Chambers said: “We are working continuously on the project.

“We have surveyed every type of culvert, using every technique available, including CCTV camera surveys, walk through surveys and float through surveys.

“We are working through the programme methodically, plotting drainage lines and culverts that present the highest flood risk, so the council has a clear picture of the quality of their drainage assets and how best to maintain them.”

Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Cllr David Chadwick, said: “Lanes Group has been working in partnership with us on this programme.

“Our main objective is to make sure our culverts are in good condition to minimise the risk of flooding.

“The drainage survey work Lanes are doing will help us achieve that. In the longer-term, the extra detail provided in the survey reports will help us prepare plans for the management of our culverts in the future.”
