Leading the way in environmental compliance with Lanes and Aquasentry

Yorkshire-based transformer manufacturer, Winder Power, is the first site in Europe to install a revolutionary web-interfaced interceptor monitor, thanks to Lanes and Aquasentry.

The web-based monitor and alarm system recognises high oil levels in the interceptors, and triggers an alarm which immediately closes a device to seal the site within seconds. It ensures that Winder’s site is protected from oil spill incidents, 24-hours a day, 365-days a year.

Winder already had good safety protocols in place for drainage and oil spill control, but an ISO14001 audit showed that it may be vulnerable at weekends and nights when there was no one on site. SHEQ manager, Chris Brookes, explains:

“We asked Lanes, our drainage consultant, to look at ways in which we could increase that protection. Happily for us, Lanes has a partnership with spill control and pollution prevention specialist Aquasentry and, together, they came up with this innovative monitor, alarm and shut-off solution.

“It gives us complete confidence because it works round the clock and, if the alarm activates and shuts down the site, the system automatically e-mails or texts up to 12 nominated people via the web server — including Lanes — ensuring that we are able to resolve any oil spill issues quickly.

“We can also seal the site manually every time we take an oil delivery. Once it has been made safely, we simply release the flow again. It is a real belts and braces safety product.”

With this installation, Chris says Winder has taken another step in its commitment to maintaining the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard: “As far as we are aware, this is the best system on the market. I think it could well become the benchmark for all environmentally responsible companies which handle oil.”
