Race Marshal Scott wins promotion for Tour de Yorkshire

Lanes Group Commercial Director Scott Norris has been selected to be a supervising marshal for the Tour de Yorkshire.

He has already acted as a volunteer race marshal for the Tour of Britain, during two stages of the race held last year and two stages of the race held in 2015.

Now, he has gone one better and will be the supervising marshal for an intermediate sprint during the Tour de Yorkshire.

Scott said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a race marshal for the Tour of Britain. It’s a fantastic way to support a great event and see how it works up close and personal.

“When I volunteered for the Tour de Yorkshire, we attended a training day at West Yorkshire Police training centre in Wakefield. Afterwards, I was hoping to be selected as a race marshal once again, but was very surprised and delighted to be chosen to be a supervising marshal.”

Some of the world’s top professional riders, men and women, will take part in the event. The men’s race is being held over three days.

Stage 1, on Friday 28 April, is from Bridlington to Scarborough. Stage 2, on Saturday 29 April, is from Tadcaster to Harrogate. Stage 3, on Sunday April 30, is from Bradford to Sheffield.

The women’s race, the Asda Tour de Yorkshire, is being held on the Stage 2 course only.

Team Sky’s Luke Rowe will ride in the race, as will Olympic gold medallist Owain Doull and world points race champion Jon Dibben.

In the women’s race, London 2012 silver medallist Lizzie Deignan will compete in her home county alongside current Olympic road-race champion Anna van der Breggen, two-time world champion Giorgia Bronzini and British road-race winner Hannah Barnes.

Scott, who is based at Lanes Group’s HQ offices in Eccles, Greater Manchester, will be the supervising marshal during the Stage 2 intermediate sprint at Ripon, 90.5 kilometres into the 122.5 stage.

He will be responsible for a team of 30 volunteer marshals who will line the route, then supervise spectators during the race, so both they and the riders, team cars and all other involved vehicles to include motorcycle outriders stay safe.

Scott, who will be a race marshal at Ilkley during Stage 3 the following day as well, said: “It’s an exciting event as a spectator. To play a part in making it happen both for riders and the watching public is even more of a buzz and I’ve ordered some fine weather for the weekend!”

“The fact that the women riders will be competing on Stage 2 makes it doubly exciting. It’s going to be a long day, but I’m already looking forward to it.”
