Durham Country Council has awarded a seven-year contract to Lanes Group plc to prove specialist drainage services.

Lanes, the UK’s largest independent drainage specialist, has been selected by competitive tender to join the local authority’s operated plant framework.

It is now one of a number of suppliers that county council’s officers can select, based on competitive criteria, to provide a range of drainage services.

Those services include the supply of jet vac tankers for drain, sewer and culvert cleaning, CCTV drainage survey services, highway gully cleaners, and reactive drain unblocking vans.

Lanes Group Development Director Richard Leigh said: “Durham County Council needs to be able to rely on a specialist drainage service that will always respond quickly, safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively to their needs.

“That is what we’re highly experienced drainage teams in the North East of England are ready to do. We have the capacity and capability to respond to whatever drainage challenge they call on us to resolve.”

The service will be managed by Lanes’ Newcastle depot, which can also draw on the support of colleagues at the Lanes Stockton depot.

Gavin Potts, Regional Manager of Lanes Newcastle, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to make our drainage services available to Durham County Council.

“Our aim is to provide the people of Durham with a service based on excellent local knowledge and the highest level of customer service, while being able to draw on, if necessary, the full range of resources Lanes has to offer, as a national leader in drainage technology, and its application.

“We employ more than 20 local people at the depot, including 17 drainage engineers, some of whom come from the Durham area, so they will be pleased to be serving their local community.”

Durham County Council serves an area with a population of over 500,000, in communities that include Durham city, Sedgefield, Easington, Teesdale, Wear Valley, Derwentside, and Chester-le-Street.

Lanes Group operates some of the most advanced specialist drainage vehicles in the UK in the North East of England, including recycler jet vac tankers, which are 68% more sustainable and productive than standard jet vac tankers, and ultra-high-pressure jetting equipment.

Services they regularly provide for local authorities in the region include highway drainage cleaning and root cutting, school and college drain and sewer CCTV surveying and cleaning, and care home drainage cleaning.

Lanes Group is holder of the RoSPA Gold Medal for its consistent and long-term commitment to health and safety, and is the Construction News Specialist Contractor of the Year 2017.
