Surf’s up in the mountains of North Wales!

Surf Snowdonia – a unique sports attraction developed with specialist drainage support from Lanes Group – has opened to public acclaim.

The amazing inland water sports centre, nestled beneath the mountains of Snowdonia, generates the longest man-made surfing waves in the world.

And the beauty of it is, each wave at the Surf Snowdonia Wavegarden – one of the first of many planned around the globe – caters for the full range of surfing abilities.

Closest to the wave generator at the £12m artificial lagoon, the waves are up to two metres high, in the middle they are 1.2 metres. While on the outside, they are 0.7 metre surfing tiddlers, perfect for beginners of all ages.

Lanes Group’s Chester depot provided specialist drainage support during construction of the attraction on the site of a former aluminium plant, at Dolgarrog, Conwy, North Wales, developed by Conwy Adventure Leisure.

Its centrepiece is the lagoon, 330 metres long and 113 metres wide, in which a wave that rolls for 150 metres is created by a huge central wave machine, 18 times every hour.

Ian Clapham, Area Development Manager for Lanes Chester, said: “While the wave technicians got on with the exciting part of creating a giant wave-making machine, we concentrate on the more mundane water works at the centre.

“We’re pleased that Lanes Group specialist drainage technology has helped in the overall development of the site, which is bound to become a big and important tourist attraction in North Wales.”

Lanes Group was commissioned to carry out a number of CCTV drainage surveys and to clean both surface and foul water drainage systems by Surf Snowdonia’s main contractor D Morgan.

Ian Clapham said: “This has been one of the more unusual projects we’ve been proud to support in the last 12 months. The construction schedule was very tight, given the strong desire for Surf Snowdonia to open this summer.

“We made sure we responded swiftly and efficiently to all requests for specialist drainage support. The results, in terms of a very special visitor attraction, are impressive.”

Surf Snowdonia has created 100 new jobs and is expected to attract 75,000 extra visitors a year to North Wales.
