How we won our 8th consecutive RoSPA Gold Award


Today, at the 61st annual award scheme organised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), we are set to receive a RoSPA Gold Health and Safety Award for the 8th year in a row.

This is one of the most rigorous and prestigious tests of health and safety in the UK, so we are extremely proud to have been awarded this honour for another year.

But what is so special about the work that we do across Lanes Group, and how do we demonstrate the continuous improvement necessary to win the award each year?

Feeling app

One of the innovations that caught the eye of RoSPA is the ground-breaking wellbeing app that we use to better understand how our workers are feeling on a day-to-day basis.

Every morning our employees log in and are asked how they are feeling that day, with the option to choose:

  • Very happy
  • Happy
  • Okay
  • Unhappy
  • Very unhappy

They are then given the opportunity to tell the app whether they need help with any concerns they might have. If they select ‘yes’ an alert will be sent to their relevant line manager, who will then be able to provide the support required.

Using this innovative Cloud and digital technology shows our employees that we care about their wellbeing, which we think is integral to promoting workplace safety, customer satisfaction and, of course, ensuring our teams are as happy, focused and engaged as possible.

SHE app

Another demonstration of our use of the latest technology to improve health and safety across the entire Group is the launch of our SHE app.

This phone app provides 24-hour access to health and safety information and record inspections data for directors, managers and supervisors. In addition, it allows users to report significant events, where necessary.

As a result, management at Lanes now have a mobile portal for the SHE digital platform, which records and communicates health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) data. This means staff can easily review, agree and adopt common HSEQ standards across our entire network of depots.

The Igloo

Over the last 12 months we have taken training in the industry to the next level with our Igloo theatre – a ground-breaking 360° projection theatre with wraparound sound and vision that allows teams to see and hear what it’s like to be inside a sewer.

It works like a giant virtual reality headset, placing users in the middle of the real-time worksite challenges, allowing them to learn in an interactive way and then test what they have learned. This all means that not only do our employees improve their knowledge and application of health and safety standards, but they are learning about it in a really engaging and exciting way.

Green Yellow Red Scheme

Earlier this year we put in place an initiative to encourage and champion the best standards of health and safety by using green, yellow and red cards to show teams if they have passed a rigorous new safety inspection programme.

Engineers who pass with flying colours are presented with a green card, those who meet some – but not all – standards are given a yellow card and those who fail the inspection are given a red card.

The idea is to give recognition to our engineers, but also to challenge them to achieve health and safety excellence time after time. And so far it appears to be working, as the number of reported manual handling incidents has fallen since the scheme was introduced.

Regular risk assessments

Because of the numerous hazards that could put our workers and the public in danger at any site on which we are working, we need to make sure we carry out regular risk assessments of each and every situation.

We also ensure that there is a safe system of work in place for all employees in hazardous situations, and that they have the appropriate tools and personal protective equipment.

Industry-leading training

As demonstrated with our significant investment in the Igloo theatre, we are dedicated to providing regular training of the highest quality to all of our employees.

Confined space training is one of the most important parts of ensuring our health and safety standards are up to scratch and that our staff are as safe as possible at all times.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), confined spaces – places that are substantially enclosed and where serious injury can occur from hazardous substances of conditions within, or near, to the space – are a common cause of deaths in the UK in a range of industries.

Our drainage experts could encounter a range of risks in confined spaces, such as:

  • Poisonous sewer gases
  • Liquids that can fill the confined space
  • A lack of oxygen
  • Hot conditions
  • High concentrations of dust
  • Fire and explosions

As a result, we ensure all staff working on the drainage network have completed their confined space training as quickly as possible upon joining the company.

That is in addition to our world-first, City & Guilds-accredited Drainage Engineer training course and the Cured in Place Pipe Lining (CIPP) Foundation City & Guilds course, which both place a large emphasis on health and safety training.

What next?

Despite claiming our 8th consecutive RoSPA Gold Health and Safety Award, you can rest assured that we will not become complacent when it comes to health and safety.

Over the coming years we will maintain our dedication to the highest standards and the best training, and, fingers crossed, we will hope to be celebrating next year with our 9th consecutive award.
