Eat, drink, exercise: it’s Health and Wellbeing Week

Hundreds of wastewater network maintenance staff working at Lanes Utilities are being invited to eat, drink, and exercise during its Health and Wellbeing Week.

The week of special events is being held to support a similar initiative organised by Thames Water. Lanes Utilities, part of Lanes Group plc, is Thames Water’s wastewater network services maintenance partner.

Lanes Utilities Health and Safety Manager Kris Taylor said: “Staff wellbeing is just as important to us as safety. We want our colleagues to be healthier and feel happier during their work.

“That is why we’ve organised this week of events to help and inspire our teams to improve their wellbeing, which will benefit them both in work and with all their activities out of work as well.”

A busy calendar of activities includes:

Monday 23 October – Fitness training circuit classes at the joint Lanes and Thames Water Customer Solutions Centre in Slough, Berkshire.

Tuesday 24 October – Nutritional workshops hosted by professional nutrition coach Caroline Sindell, to give colleagues tips on how to food that’s healthy, tasty, and affordable, during work and at home.

Wednesday 25 October – Hygiene at work. Colleagues will get the chance to test their hand hygiene, with a machine that shows how potentially harmful germs can linger on the skin if hands are not washed properly

Wednesday 25 October – Another opportunity to stretch limbs and raise heartbeats with fitness circuit classes.

Thursday 26 October – Hydration Drive: all colleagues will be reminded to use the water bottles issued to them, and a survey will be carried out to find out what volume of fluids people drink at work. Good hydration is important for good health and to maintain energy levels.

Friday 27 October – Let’s Walk and Talk! Health and Safety Manager Kris Taylor will invite colleagues to take a refreshing 15-minute breaktime walk, to discuss the importance of mental health.

Lanes Utilities Director Andy Brierley said: “Wellbeing initiatives we’ve held in the past have been very popular, and have helped colleagues make a really positive difference to their lives, including giving up smoking, and reducing excess weight.

“We’re pleased to be able to continue this work during our Health and Wellbeing Week. It’s all about encouraging colleagues to support each other in making healthy lifestyle choices. The rewards can be amazing.”
