Further Information

If your property has a septic tank, it’s important to keep up to date with the relevant rules, regulations and responsibilities – especially if they change.

Recent legislative updates, which came into force in January 2020, make it illegal for septic tanks to discharge directly into a watercourse – this must be remedied by connecting to the main sewer network, creating a drainage field or installing a sewage treatment plant.

The law applies to houses with existing septic tanks as well as newly-built properties, so make sure you have complied – you could be fined up to £100,000 if not.

For more information, consult the official government guidance on this legislation. You can also check out our homeowners’ guide to septic tanks, our advice on the essentials of septic tank maintenance, or download our septic tank best practice guide.
