Lanes volunteers go wild for the environment

Teams of volunteers from Lanes Utilities have shown their wild sides to support environmental conservation.

They have taken part in two Wild Work Days in support of the London Wild Life Trust.

Lanes Utilities, part of Lanes Group plc, is the wastewater network services maintenance partner for Thames Water.

It is responsible for surveying, unblocking, cleaning and repairing drains, sewers and wet wells across the Thames Water region.

It is also an Investor in Wildlife, primarily supporting the London Wildlife Trust and Berks and Bucks Wildlife Trust.

As such, more than 20 Lanes Utilities colleagues worked over two consecutive days to clear brambles from the Huckerby’s Meadows Nature Reserve in Hillingdon, West London.

Lanes Utilities Hannah Clark, Business Systems and Compliance Manager, who helped organise the event, said: “We had two brilliant days.

“The brambles were overwhelming other important plants and habitats in part of the reserve, so needed cutting back.

“It’s hard work and bramble, with their sharp thorns, are a real handful.

“However, our colleagues at the London Wildlife Trust gave us all the right equipment and guidance – and supported us on both days.

“It was good to know, once our Wild Work Days were completed, that our battle with the brambles will make a difference!”

Wild Work Days are an activity offered to Investors in Wildlife, a support programme set up by wildlife trusts to involve organisations in their work.

Lanes Group Director Andy Brierley said: “It’s great to see so many colleagues are so keen to get involved with Wild Work Days.

“As a water utility maintenance specialist, we already play a big part in protecting the environment from pollution and helping treat wastewater sustainably.

“But we’re always keen to do as much as we can to support wildlife and help our local communities.”
