PollutionControl

Prevention is better than cure

Pollution Prevention Guidelines aim to help businesses avoid unnecessary and costly environmental mistakes, and follow the European Environmental Directive 2004/35/EC. This is based on a 'polluter pays' principle, which can result in unlimited fines or two years’ imprisonment if you fall foul of the legislation. Remember too that a spill may cost a business, typically, £30,000 in fines, clean up charges and production losses.

A partnership for pollution prevention

Lanes is involved in this field through maintaining drainage systems, emptying interceptors, bunds and tanks, and as a registered waste handler. And, as a direct result of our consultancy work with organisations aiming to meet IPPC (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) legislation and ISO14001 environmental standards, we have a partnership with Aquasentry to supply its range of market-leading, pollution prevention, monitoring, spill control and clean-up solutions.

Prevention is better than cure

Aquasentry works with the environmental authorities so, naturally, these products comply with the latest legislation and codes of practice. But environmental compliance is only part of the story. Lanes and Aquasentry understand that saving costs is also a high priority for customers, so these pollution prevention products, systems and service are designed to be both environmentally and economically effective, protecting your profits and minimising your environmental impact.

Practical pollution prevention

Lanes’ pollution control offerings feature innovative Aquasentry technology, which raises the alarm if there is a pollution risk — and eliminates unnecessary waste management costs.

Innovative Interceptor Monitor

Interceptors or separators capture oil, chemicals and silt from areas like production facilities, car parks and storage areas. They are the final defence against polluting watercourses and sewage systems, so neglecting them can have serious consequences for the environment — and your business, with the possibility of prosecution, fines and clean-up costs if there is a pollution incident.

The Aquasentry Interceptor Monitor alerts you to a potential problem before it happens, by warning of excessive levels of oil, liquid and silt, so the interceptor can be emptied as required, rather than at specified intervals. The monitor ensures compliance with the Environment Agency’s PPG3 (which relates specifically to the monitoring and upkeep of interceptors), and can be fitted retrospectively to your interceptors.

Pollution Control Devices

Pollution control devices are designed to contain pollutants, such as firewater run-off and oil spills, in case of an accident or disaster on site, by shutting down the drains within seconds — at the touch of a button. There are three models, each of which can be operated manually, automatically, by a fire alarm link or even by text. All can be fitted to drainage systems retrospectively, and comply with the Environment Agency’s PPG 2, 11, 18, 21 and 22.

CheckValve is a pneumatically activated unit, which seals the site within three seconds to ensure environmental compliance with PPG 2, 11, 18, 21 and 22. Designed to contain large heads of water, it can be fitted to outfalls of up to 72” (1875mm).

FlapStopper is activated pneumatically by an airline to seal a site within three seconds, and is suitable for outfalls of up to 24” (610mm) diameter; whereas DrainStopper is a bladder unit, ideal for low usage sites and low head of water applications, for drains up to 18” (450mm).

Bund Water Control Units

For situations where there is a build up of rain water mixed with oil residues in bunds or secondary containment systems, Bund Water Control Units are designed to pump out the water from the bunded areas, thereby maintaining the minimum 110% storage capacity of the largest tank required by Environment Agency guidelines. This automatic, low-maintenance system detects the difference between oil and water and pumps away the water into the surface water drainage system or soak-away, leaving behind the oil and contaminates, which can then easily be removed by a waste management company. This allows economical and effective waste removal and reduces your disposal costs, whilst also protecting the bund from disintegration.
