Project Challenge

This busy commuter railway station in West London was in needof a number of key repairs to maintain high standards of structural integrity, safety and customer service. Work included concrete repairs to platform piers and rebedding of platform nosing stones. All work had to be carried out at night, when the line was closed, to avoid inconveniencing the many thousands of daytime rail users.

Project Overview

Lanes Rail was commissioned by London Underground to carry out concrete support and platform repairs at Northfields tube station on the Heathrow branch of the Piccadilly line in Ealing, West London. The five-week project at the overground station included repairing piers supporting platforms and platform nosing stones.

Concrete piers on all four platforms were repaired. Metal reinforcement were cleaned and coated with anti-corrosion primer. Sections on each pier where concrete has been lost or removed were then repaired.

A total of 20 platform nosing stones were due to be rebedded. The slabs were lifted out with vacuum lifters, then re-concreted back into place. With the constant effect of hundreds of thousands of rail passengers using the station, the nosing stones can work loose, and need to be rebedded.

The work was carried out at night when the station was closed and no trains were running, so there was no inconvenience to the travelling public.
