Lanes Group keeps tram plan on track with innovative sewer reline project

Lanes Group has deployed an innovative combination of trenchless drain rehabilitation techniques to support the development of a £570m new tramline in Nottingham.

A combination of ultraviolet and hot cure pipe relining was used in a sewer strengthening project that won Lanes a UKSTT Renovation Award 2014 (under £250,000).

The Lanes Reline Division team had to carry out its work in a live construction environment, which resulted in what could have been a 4-week project being phased over five months.

Lanes Group has worked on all stages of Phase 2 of Nottingham’s NET tram expansion. The new 17.5km line, with 28 stops, is due to open by July 2015.

In a key project, Severn Trent Water commissioned Lanes to reline 750m of main sewer close to Nottingham University, so the 750mm diameter pipe could take the weight of the trams.

The job was completed using specialist desilting machines, splitting the relining process between UV and hot cure relining, and working with contractors to overcome major pipe access problems.

Lanes Group Business Development Director Richard Leigh said:

“Our success demonstrates the benefits of no dig technology, and the need to often be creative in overcoming challenges to support client objectives.”
