Lanes Rail wins second drainage contract with Transport for London

Lanes Rail has won a contract to deliver drainage maintenance services on four of Transport for London’s sub-surface and deep level Underground lines.

It has been awarded the entire Lot 2 drainage contract for Sub-Surface Lines (SSL) and BCV Lines. Previously, Lanes had shared the contract with Skanska.

The contract covers drainage maintenance work on 8,000 rail assets a year on the Circle, Hammersmith and City, District, Metropolitan, Bakerloo, Central and Victoria Lines.

TfL had already re-awarded Lanes its Lot 3 contracts to maintain structure and drainage assets associated with the Jubilee, Northern, and Piccadilly lines.

The new Lot 2 contract, which goes live on April 1, involves delivering CCTV surveying, acoustic surveying, track drainage maintenance and catch-pit cleaning services.

Estimated to be worth £2m a year over five years, it is the second TfL contract win in 2017 for Lanes Rail, part of Lanes Group, the UK’s largest independent drainage specialist.

Both contract bundles have been awarded under a new procurement regime introduced by TfL to streamline its maintenance supply chain.

Matthew Todd, Commercial Director of Lanes Rail, based at Rainham, Essex, said: “We are delighted to have retained the work we already had, and to have won the additional work available under Lot 2.

“TfL wanted to streamline its maintenance process, and realise the performance improvements and cost savings that promised. Our experience, expertise, and resources meant we were well-placed to deliver on those aims.

“Our teams have already proved their worth overcoming complex access issues, and enhancing productivity through co-ordinated planning of work packages, such as CCTV surveying and track drainage cleaning.

“Lanes Rail was the only accredited drainage contractor with a license to deliver the advanced acoustic pipe diagnostic service TfL wants to introduce.

“We’re eager to get started, and realise the benefits this new contract will deliver for London Underground’s customers, by reducing the risk of service disruption that track flooding can cause.”

Under the contract, Lanes Rail will explore innovative ways to enhance track drainage, including the use of new CCTV camera technology to speed up asset condition surveys, making maintenance more responsive.
