National drainage and wastewater service specialist Lanes Group plc has been shortlisted for a prestigious Construction News Award.

It has been selected under the Specialist Contractor of the Year category after impressing judges with its strong growth and impressive service delivery.

The Construction News Awards are among the most sought after accolades in the building industry, setting a benchmark for operational excellence.

High performance teams

Lanes Group Business Development Director Colin Mackay said: “Being named as a finalist in the 2024 Construction News Awards is testament to the dedication and high performance of all our teams.

“The company has grown rapidly over the last two years, broadening its service portfolio and further developing our capabilities to deliver significant value for our customers.

“We’re delighted Lanes Group has been recognised as one of the UK’s leading specialist contractors serving the construction industry, always striving to make drainage services more productive, safer and more sustainable.”

Laser scanning technology

During 2023, Lanes Group strengthened its position as the UK’s largest drainage and wastewater contractor with annual turnover breaking through half a billion pounds.

Through acquisition, new service start-ups and continuous innovation, it has enhanced its ability to support infrastructure projects with the latest and most capable specialist vehicles and technologies, at any scale.

In 2023, the company completed its support for a four-year project to upgrade the M4 between Junctions 12 and 3 in Berkshire, with up to six recycler jet vac tankers mobilised per shift.

Its teams began using innovative remote laser and image scanning to support the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine upgrade. The system doubles the productivity of chamber surveying and improves safety.

Transport telematics leader

Lanes Group also introduced a new LED CIPP lining system, used for the first time in the UK, to support a project to refurbish more than 30 high-rise flats in Birmingham, with significantly less disruption for tenants.

The company is also an acknowledged leader and innovator in the use of vehicle telematics. During 2023, it rolled out the AI-enabled Samsara system to all if its 4,000 HGVs, vans and cars.

Lanes Group is in the top quartile for driver performance monitored by Samsara globally and in the top 3% for the rigour of its set standards. Annual insurance claim costs have fallen by £250,000.

Saving sewers and seas

During 2023, it ran its Unblocktober campaign, the world’s first annual engagement campaign to protect sewers and oceans from plastic pollution. Now in its fourth year, it achieved record levels of involvement and exposure.

Specialist Contractor of the Year is one of nine Business Excellence categories and one of 24 categories in total in this year’s Construction News Awards.

Shortlisted candidates give presentations to the award judges in May. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony being held at JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London on Thursday 11 July 2024.
