5 Years of Fatberg Fighting: Unblocktober 2023

As September comes to an end, we welcome the start of Unblocktober and this year marks the 5th anniversary of this fatberg fighting campaign.

For the month of Unblocktober, we’re encouraging you to get involved and help to improve the health of drains and sewers around the country and keep watercourses and seas clear from pollution with just a few little changes.

Small actions have big impacts, and that’s what Unblocktober is all about.

How does Unblocktober work?

It’s totally free to get involved with Unblocktober, all you need to do is make some mindful changes to how you interact with your drains.

What does this mean? One of the biggest problems for drains and sewers is things going down the sink and toilet that shouldn’t. In fact, as many as 75,000 blockages in the UK are down to cooking oil and wet wipes getting sent down the pipes.

For the month of October, you can do your bit by pledging to change your habits at home and work and stop putting things down the drain that don’t belong there. For example:

  • Cooking oil, butter, and lard
  • Other food waste including sauces
  • Wet wipes, nappies, and sanitary products
  • Anything containing plastic

All of these products frequently end up washed down the drain, and the consequences for the environment and for the health of our drains and sewers are huge. If we all start disposing of these products correctly, the benefits will be seen for time to come for both the environment and the public’s pockets, and it starts with Unblocktober.

Why not get started by learning more about how to dispose of cooking oil and fats and wet wipes the right way?
