Lanes Group director completes IOSH Directing Safely course

Lanes Group Operations Director Alan Wallis has completed IOSH Directing Safely training, reflecting the company’s commitment to embedding health and safety in strategic decision-making.

He attended and passed the course as part of Lanes Group’s occupational health and safety strategy which requires teams and individuals at all levels in the organisation to have appropriate training and skills.

Alan Wallis is the drainage specialist’s boardroom lead for health and safety. He said: “Health and Safety is a major priority in the drainage industry, given the many hazards faced by our teams.

“However, there is no room for complacency. Continuous learning and refreshing of knowledge is an essential approach to effective health and safety systems. Attending the IOSH Directing Safely course was an important part of the at process.”

The course, designed specifically for organisation directors and senior managers, has five modules: moral, legal and financial issues; planning for health and safety; then implementing, monitoring and improving health and safety systems and performance.

Lanes Group, which achieved a RoSPA Gold Medal in 2016, has a strong record in providing health and safety training, supported by robust digital management systems.

Within its depot network, during 2016, fifteen managers and supervisors were given train the trainer training in reversing vehicles safely. Lanes Utilities introduced NEBOSH general certificate training for managers and supervisors. Lanes Rail extended Managing Safely training to supervisors.

Lanes Utilities has established a 360-degree video wall training theatre, the first of its kind in the utility industry, so trainees can be immersed in and experience real-timing worksite scenarios.

A new national training manager has been appointed to oversee training across the depot network, and the company is further developing its unique City & Guilds training course for drainage engineers.

Also, Lanes Utilities is a finalist for the Construction News Health and Safety Excellence Award 2017, for its development of a range of initiatives, including a green card award scheme for site safety.
