Lanes secures prison drainage cleaning and survey work

Drainage engineers from Lanes Group have carried out a comprehensive drainage survey at a privately-run prison.

Sodexo Justice Services commissioned Lanes Group’s Manchester depot to carry out the work at the category B Forest Bank prison, at Swinton, Salford, which can hold 1,460 male prisoners.

Alistair Culpan, Assistant Facilities Manager for the prison, said: “The drainage survey was part of a planned maintenance strategy for the facility.

“The survey data prepared by the Lanes team will allow us to plan any maintenance work needed within the lifecycle of the building.”

A Lanes jet vac tanker crew and a CCTV drainage survey crew worked on the project which too three weeks to complete.

Full on-site security procedures were followed and the teams were accompanied at all times by Sodexo personnel.

A combination of robotic crawler CCTV cameras and flexible push-rod CCTV cameras were used to gather HD quality video footage of all surface water and foul drains, which ranged from 100mm to 375mm in diameter.

As with all prison establishments, the drainage system has interceptors installed where it interfaces with the wider drainage network.

Lanes Manchester Area Development Manager Simon Roberts said: “While Forest Bank is obviously a specialist facility, its drainage system is not too different to other similar-sized buildings.

“Also, our personnel are experienced at working in a wide range of secure and sensitive environments, from nuclear power stations to scientific laboratories, so they were well placed to give Sodexo the service they needed.”
