Suction technology a roaring success at monster golf park

Drainage engineers from Lanes Group plc have used their advanced suction technology to assist the UK’s busiest adventure golf centre in keeping its dramatic water features flowing smoothly.

With giant dinosaurs looking on – not real ones, thankfully – they removed 4 tonnes of silt from a sump in the pond at the Dino Falls golf attraction next to the M60 in Trafford Park, Manchester.

The sump cleaning project ensured a pump that maintains the flow of water through a series of water falls and rapids around two 18-hole adventure golf courses on the site could work smoothly.

Silt removal

Dino Falls Adventure Golf is part of the Trafford Golf Centre, Europe’s most popular golf practice facility, with a driving range that has the latest digital technology to assist players in perfecting their swings.

The eye-catching water features running through the adventure golf courses add to the drama and fun for visitors, and need regular maintenance to keep them flowing freely.

Trafford Golf Centre Director Pete Styles said: “Our maintenance teams usually dig out the silt that builds up in the sump using shovels, but we invited Lanes to help us do the work this year.

“By sucking out the silt, the work can be carried out more quickly. Manual handling is also reduced to a minimum, which is safer for our teams. It worked very well. We were impressed.”

Quicker process

Water was drained from the pond, which is 20 metres long, 10 metres wide and one metre deep, giving the Lanes drainage engineers access to the sump in which the pump is installed.

Lanes Manchester Depot Area Development Manager Ian Clapham said: “As planned, we could remove most of the silt using the vacuumation hose of our recycler jet vac tanker.

“Some of the silt right at the bottom was very compacted and had to be removed using shovels, but the process was much quicker, so the water features could be back up and running without delay.

“We’re pleased we could assist Pete and his team with their planned maintenance duties, and use our capabilities to support one of Manchester’s most popular sporting attractions.”

Lanes operates the biggest fleet of recycler jet vac tankers in the UK. They can filter and reuse their jetting water so can stay on station for longer between water refills, increasing productivity by over 60% and reducing the carbon footprint of jetting operations.
