Superheroes put best feet forward for Road Safety Week

A team of safety, transport and fleet management professionals from Lanes Group plc are dressing up as superheroes for a sponsored walk to mark Road Safety Week.

They are sure to impress passersby as they walk the 10 miles from the Lanes utility depot at Iver in Buckinghamshire to the Customer Solution Centre (CSC) at Slough, Berkshire, on Tuesday 16^th November.

The team will reach there in time to be in the audience as Thames Valley Police gives a presentation for Lanes staff, also to mark Road Safety Week.

Be a Road Safety Hero is the theme of this year’s week-long series of activities to educate the travelling public, organised by Brake, the road safety charity.

The sponsored walkers, who will include Superwoman, Superman and Wanda Maximoff, all work for the Lanes utilities division, the wastewater network service maintenance partner for Thames Water.

They are raising money for Sudden, a national charity that works closely with Brake, providing support for individuals and families affected by sudden bereavement.

Sam Heffernan, Lanes utilities’ south east region transport lead, said: “Road transport is our biggest operational risk which is why we’re very pleased to support Road Safety Week.

“It’s an opportunity for us to focus minds on how, by our individual actions, we can work more safety at work and make our communities safer for everyone.

“We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to get expert advice from Thames Valley Police, with latest insights on how to be safe on the road.

“We will be urging our field and operational managers, in particular, to attend the talk, along with CSC colleagues, so they can cascade the advice to our operational teams across London and the Thames Valley.”

The talk will focus on the FATAL4 – the biggest contributors to injury and death on the roads – seatbelt misuse, speed, distractions, and drink and drug driving.

All Lanes divisions, across the UK, have robust policies and procedures in place to encourage safe road use, which are continuously being improved where possible.

These include use of digital vehicle tracking and driver monitoring systems that identify suboptimal driving styles allowing them to be challenged.

Lanes is also investing in advanced camera systems to give drivers improved visibility around their vehicles, plus vans and lorries designed to reduce injury risks if a collusion occurs.
